Payouts and void markets
Understand winning claims, void markets and refunds.
A winning claim#
When a market settles with a winning outcome, each winner is paid
principal + losing pool × (your weighted amount ÷ all winners' weighted amounts) − fee
where the fee is the class rate, less your tier discount, applied to the profit term only. Every division is floored, which may leave rounding residue: the sum of everyone's claims can never exceed the pot.
A market whose answer names more than one winning outcome pays every position on any of them. A market whose answer is a fractional vector — possible in the outcome contract, which is shared with the order book — is refused by the pool rather than paid out wrongly; such a market is voided by the deadline backstop below and refunded in full.
Void means a full refund#
A voided market pays every participant back their own principal in full, at zero fee, pull-based, and the refund never expires. Gas and separately posted dispute bonds are not part of this position refund, and there is no residue for the protocol to sweep, because every refund is exact.
The five ways a market voids#
- Under-subscribed at the cut. Evaluated once, at settlement: if the pot is below the market's minimum pool, or fewer than two outcomes hold any money, or fewer than three accounts hold a position, the market voids. A full refund harms nobody, which is what lets the design afford a hair trigger here.
- Nobody backed the winner. If the winning outcome holds no principal, there is no one to pay the losing pool to, so everyone is refunded rather than the pot being stranded.
- The source voided it. Each resolution lane has its own void path when the question cannot be answered: the chain lane voids if its observation window closes without a successful read; the optimistic lane voids if a challenged proposal is not answered in time, or if an escalated dispute is not ruled on within 48 hours. See Resolution.
- The deadline passed with no answer. Seven days after the market's resolution deadline, anyone may void an unresolved market. No key is required and the rake is zero. Before voiding, the pool first checks whether an answer already exists that nobody has settled — an answered market settles and pays its winners, and only a genuinely unanswered one voids.
- A timelocked override. The resolution router carries a void-only override: a timelock can propose voiding a condition, with evidence already linked, and anyone can execute it seven days later. There is no directional override — nothing can change which outcome won, only whether the market pays at all.
The void reasons are recorded on chain as distinct codes, and the interface shows a voided market as VOIDED with the meaning "every position refunded in full, at zero fee".
What is never possible#
- A settled answer cannot be overturned by the pool's own deadline void: the backstop is an escape from silence, not a way to reverse a result.
- Fees cannot be taken from a refund.
- Locked RINO cannot be touched by any of this. It sits in a different contract with no function any market can call.
After settlement#
Claims and refunds have no expiry. Six months after resolution, the fractions of a base unit left over by floor division on a settled market may be swept to the fee router — never any amount still owed to a claimant, and never anything on a voided market, where refunds are exact and leave nothing behind.
